NCC says SIM card registration ends June 30

  • Enugu – The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Dr Eugene Juwah, has said that the nationwide registration of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards by the commission will end on June 30.

Juwah made the announcement in Enugu on Thursday in a message to the 73rd edition of Telecoms Consumer Parliament organised by the commission.

The vice chairman, who was represented by the Director of Communications, Mrs Biodun Olujimi, said the commission would not extend the date for any reason.

According to him, any subscriber who did not register his or her number before the closing date will have the number invalidated.

He explained that the commission would commence the collation of the data for publication, adding that subsequent registration would be done by different telecom providers with approval from the commission.

Speaking on the theme of the parliament, `Mobile Number Portability: Benefits to Telecom Consumers’, the vice chairman said the service would allow consumers to switch from one network to another while retaining the current number.

He explained that the service would remove the trouble of moving around with multiple cell phones and encourage competitions among providers as well as reduce tariffs.

Juwah said the porting required registration of SIM card by the subscribers for security reasons.
“Without the registration, the network operators will not be able to identify a porting subscriber or confirm that such is the rightful owner of the number being ported,’’ he said.

Some of the consumers who spoke at the interaction lauded the programme but complained that the 90 days duration for porting was too long.

Miss Nkemdilim Nwagu, a student, said the service would reduce carrying of multiple handsets while Basil Peters, a youth corps member, said the issue of registering the SIM card again was hectic. (NAN)

Baba Suwe Loses N25 Million Award At The Court of Appeal

  • A panel of Court of Appeal judges in Lagos today set aside the N25 million compensatory damages earlier awarded Lagos comedian, Babatunde Omidina " Baba Suwe " over a prolonged detention by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) last year.

In the ruling, the Court of Appeal re-affirmed the right of the NDLEA to investigate, arrest, detain and prosecute drug suspects as long as the agency acts within the law.

The court said the NDLEA had not violated Mr. Omidina's rights because it sought and got court orders from the federal high court to keep him in custody after the arrested him on the suspicion that he had ingested hard drugs.

The Court of Appeal came down heavily on the Lagos High court judge that awarded the damages against the NDLEA, describing the decision as oppressive and burdensome to an agency of government carrying out its statutory duties.

Baba Suwe's attorneys led by civil rights activist, Bamidele Aturu,  has vowed to take the matter before the Supreme Court.

  • The Chase Housemates’ first Diary sessions were filled with a mix of emotions ranging from joy, to guilt to indifference.

Ruby Head of House, Nigeria’s Beverly was the most visibly emotional Housemate of all the Rubies. She got choked up when Biggie asked about her decision to save Bassey from the Eviction gallows and replace him with Natasha. “It’s not that I don’t like her, I have nothing against her,” the Nigerian dame insisted.

Nigeria's reps Beverly (top left) and Melvin (Bottom right) at their BBA The Chase first diary session

Bassey, who has no idea that he has been replaced in the list of Eviction Nominees by Natasha, dished to Biggie about how he feels about the Malawian. “Natasha is a control freak. She is most likely to have clashes in the House,” he declared. But he was quick to clarify to Biggie that despite her mother hen ways, he has bears no ill feelings towards her and that he does get along with her and all of the other Housemates.

Cleo was in a jovial mood during her diary session, she told Biggie that despite the fact that she did not come into the House with a strategy on how to win, she still believes that she will make it to the top. “I believe the money is mine,” she boasted.

The usually charming, Melvin played ‘Mr Cool’ and remained uncharacteristically subdued during his session and did not have much to say about his first few days in the Big Brother House.

What do you think of Melvin playing it cool and do you agree with Bassey that Natasha is a control freak?

  • If I’m not wrong, this will be the fourth time 2face will be escaping death. May God continue to protect him

Award winning singer and song writer Tuface Idibia, last Sunday narrowly escaped death while on board an airplane Lagos bound from South Africa.

It was a night flight and sources say the singer was listening to music from his iPod when he perceived a foul burning odor. The situation became more serious when the lighting system in the aircraft suddenly went off; and panic set in with some passengers whispering ”This plane is going to crash!”.

The captain then announced that the plane had developed an electrical fault and they were going to have an emergency landing. The plane had to turn around and head back to South Africa.

2face was spotted talking and calming his crew down, telling them not to panic. Miraculously, the tires came out and the plane successfully landed and the passengers were evacuated.

Thankfully the pop star is doing okay.

EXPOSED: I was persecuted because Atiku chose me as running mate – Alamieyeseigha

  • Former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has attributed his travails over allegations of corruption to the power tussle between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his vice, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar over the 2007 presidency.

Speaking to newsmen in Lagos, Alamieyeseigha said he was persecuted by President Obasanjo because of the alleged plan by Atiku Abubakar to nominate him as his running mate during the 2007 presidential election.

The former Bayelsa State governor said his arrest and travails in London and Nigeria over allegation of corruption was political, promising to expose those behind his travail in his memoirs, which he is presently writing.

His words: “The summary of it is that Atiku Abubakar, according to Obasanjo, nominated me as his running mate. End of story. He (Obasanjo) said it was over his dead body and that he would fight me and Atiku to the end of the world. He said that unless he dies, Atiku could not be president of Nigeria. That was the beginning and the end of the story.

“Maybe the only mistake I made was that I left this country to Germany for medical surgery. Again, I made the mistake of calling him (Obasanjo) when I recovered from the surgery. I told him that I just came out from the theatre. I started having funny calls and they started plotting (against) me.”

“The whole thing was political and one day I will expose everybody. I have started writing; people are ignorant of what really happened, so they can talk. But if I open my mouth, some of them will keep quiet. I am going to tell my story.”

All attempts by Saturday Mirror to reach out to Chief Obasanjo on the allegation against the former President by Alamieyeseigha proved abortive as Obasanjo and his aides refused to comment on the matter.
Speaking on the alleged face-off between President Goodluck Jonathan and Rivers State governor and chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, Alamieyeseigha cautioned Amaechi, asking him to learn from his own experience.

“I have told Amaechi himself that he should learn from my experience, that nobody tries government. He should learn that after God, it is government. Amaechi is in a regional government. There is Federal Government and there is a president and the Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces.

“Let me say that most of these things, the president himself may not know. It is people around that are creating this entire problem. If you call the two of them and sit them down, I am sure they would not be able to tell you what has happened between them,” he said.

He also had harsh words for those who criticised the state pardon granted him by the Federal Government, saying that the critics never knew what transpired behind closed doors leading to his pardon, but conceded that “people have the right to express their opinions.”

His words: “They don’t know the contributions I have made towards the sustenance of of peace in this country. May be the impact of my contribution would have been felt if there had been no oil and no money to share at the federal level.

“Because things are so rosy and at the end of the month they go to Abuja and share the money, they don’t feel the impact and don’t realise that people went into the creeks; slept in every camp to make sure that amnesty was achieved.”

He added that even President Obasanjo wrote him many commendation letters, congratulating him and thanking him for what he did, adding: “I risked my life by going as far as the high seas several times to rescue expatriates.”

  • The movie producer and soft porn star told Punch:

I may be their mother because I brought them into the world. I may have the privilege to raise them up to adult age. But you know, I cannot tell them what to do or follow at a certain age. Besides, they are Americans who have their own minds. If they graduate from college and decide to follow my footsteps, it’s their own calling. If I can predict, they wouldn’t want to do what I do because they have better opportunities and better futures than mine. All I do now is to secure a better future for them so they don’t have to go through what I went through in my life time. Mind you, I tell my daughters everything I do. I even told them about this project, the nature of it, but I could not show them because they are not up to 18 yet. I just had to prepare them in case they run into it on the Internet, they won’t be shocked. So don’t worry about my daughters, they are the best children any mother could ever ask for and I thank God for the gift.
Oh and please she doesn't like being called a porn star o, call her an actress! :-)

Wife of House of Reps members accused to torturing two women

  • Wife of a serving House of Representatives member was fingered yesterday in the torture, beating and alleged attempt to kidnap two ladies in Isale Eko area of Lagos.

Sources say that yesterday morning at about 7.15a.m, a Toyota Camry car which was used for the operation caused a stir in Bamgbose Street in Lagos Island at the heart of Lagos metropolis.

Like a bolt from the blue, six unidentified ladies, carrying canes came out of the unregistered grey coloured car and advanced towards No 101, Bamgbose Street.

The unmasked ladies met one Alhaja Basidat Ajadi Balogun, a business woman resident in the street and repeatedly flogged her as she wept. (The woman pictured above)

Balogun, who was shouting at the top of her voice while the beating was going on, tried without success to find out from the rampaging ladies why she was being beaten.

According to a resident of the street, who pleaded not to be mentioned, while the severe beating was going on, Alhaja Jolaade Batola, wife of an influencial legislator, a House of Representatives member, representing Mainland federal constituency, was seen seated, inside the unregistered Toyota Camry car and giving orders to the lady on what to do to their victim.

The Nigerian Compass on Saturday, further learnt that the rampaging ladies planned to take the business woman away but for her resistance. The boot of their Camry was thrown open, while the woman in the car ordered the ladies to drag the woman and throw her into the boot.

Independent checks at the Lion Building police command however showed that the matter has been reported there even as our correspondent on Friday traced the battered business woman to the General Hospital, who was receiving treatment.

Though she was initially reluctant to speak with The Nigerian Compass on Saturday, when she opened up, she said she was standing outside her resident, talking to a tenant, when the six ladies, unknown to her, accompanied, by Mrs Batola arrived the place and began to beat her up.

She however insisted that she does not know the reason why the ladies beat the hell out of her, insisting that she was not close to the wife of the House of Representatives member. “Though Alhaja Batola owns a shop on the same Bamgbose Street, we are not really close. Though I do greet her,” said the victim.

The woman whose body was full of scares from the beating put the cost of her medical treatment as well as some of jewelries she was wearing when she was attacked at N600,000, and confirmed that but for the residents, who mobilised and confronted the ladies, she could have been kidnapped.

Inquiries at the Lion Building police station, in Lagos Island revealed to our correspondent that the case have been filed. The woman was asked to get a police report on the incident, a police source disclosed.

Attempts made to see Alhaja Owolabi Batola for her comment on the incident proved abortive as her shop located on the same Bamgbose Street was not opened yesterday.

Dana crash: Coroner threatens to close pathologist’s testimony

  • A Lagos State coroner court in Ikeja conducting an inquest into last year’s crash of a Dana Airline plane may cut short the testimony of the state’s Chief Medical Examiner, Prof. John Obafunwa, over his repeated absence from court.

Obafunwa, who doubles as the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, was absent for cross-examination on Monday and Tuesday.

All the 153 persons on board and others on the ground were killed in the crash involving Dana’s MD-83 plane on June 3, 2012.

Obafunwa’s testimony is crucial to the inquest, which is a system established to, among others, make recommendations and find out the cause of death, how and the  manner of death of the deceased in unusual circumstances.

The forensic pathologist had earlier testified on the probable causes of the death of the victims and provided the details of autopsy tests and the identification processes conducted on them.

Counsel representing the Lagos State Government in the proceedings, Mr. Akinjide Bakare, restated on Tuesday that the don was absent from court because of his “university duties”.

“We are sorry, we did not envisage this after what happened yesterday (Monday),” Bakare said.
He gave the same reason for Obafunwa’s absence on Monday.

Counsel for Dana Airline, Chief Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), who was to cross-examine Obafunwa, on Tuesday expressed disappointment over Obafunwa’s absence from court.

He said the adjournments suffered by the inquest were avoidable, if the offices of LASU’s Vice-Chancellor and the Lagos State Chief Medical Examiner were not being occupied by the same person.

The coroner, Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, who had wished to conclude the proceedings within the week, was forced to fix July 3 and 4 for the forensic pathologist to appear in court.

In a desperate attempt to draw attention to her misfortune, Esther Odozi, 21, bared her breasts on Monday on the premises of Ikeja Magistrate’s Court as she protested against hunger that was “killing her and the five children” she left back home in Agbor Owanta, Delta State.
Odozi laid half-naked on a road in the court shouting, “Hunger, hunger. Government must do something today. I have not received anything from the plenty crude oil money government is spending in our state. Nigerians are wicked.”
She impeded movement on the premises. Passersby were astonished. One of them, who did not state her name but said she was a lawyer, told our correspondent that Odozi abused the “temple of womanhood.”
Odozi shunned passersby who shouted at her to cover herself as she rolled on the ground. She revealed wounds on her left leg and the right side of her hips; she said she was hit by a car. She refused a N500 given to her by a passerby, saying, “I don’t want your money. I want Fashola to give me N200, 000.”
When our correspondent approached her, she said, “After confronting serious hardship in my state, I was advised by an official of Human Rights Commission in Delta to go to Human Rights Commission in Abuja. I also went to Police Headquarters and NAPTIP (National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons) in Abuja. They all told me to go to Lagos; they said that is where I could get help.”
“My husband, Donald Ogbaja, was a retired policeman before he died of hunger. He married me when I was 17. I bore five children, including twins for him.”
Odozi said she tried to survive on her own by cultivating some crops. She, however, said she was hit by a car and had been hindered by her injury to continue working on her farm.
She said, “I will not leave this court without seeing N200,000 to start business. I want to sell melon and garri. Tell Emmanuel Uduaghan, the governor of my state, and the Federal Government to do something about my condition. They must give me part of the petrol money. I must take care of my five children.”
When she was asked that as a young woman, didn’t she feel ashamed to bare her breast? She answered, “I don’t have anything and I don’t have anything to hide anymore.”

(Okay, it's been around for a few months, but this is the first time HuffPost UK Lifestyle has come across these ladies and their thigh stickers.)

Innovative PR company Absolute Territory PR is paying women to wear advertising stickers on their “absolute territory”, the area of skin visible between their high socks and the hemline of their miniskirts, according to Content Standard.

In Japan, this area of flesh -- translated as "zettai ryouiki" -- has become something of a fettish, with its own facebook page.

Individuals interested in branding their legs must have a social media account, states the PR team and have just eight hours to post their sticker in order to meet the conditions of their contract and receive their payment.

Photos: First solar plane on cross-country US trip

    By: Unknown On: 10:00
  • Share The Gag
  • The first-ever manned airplane that can fly by day or night on the sun's power alone soared over the western United States late Friday on the first leg of cross-country journey.

Solar Impulse, piloted by Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard, left the runway in northern California at 6:12 am (1312 GMT) against the backdrop of a golden morning sunrise, in what a mission control operator called a "perfect takeoff."

Flying quietly and slowly at an average speed of about 30 miles (49 kilometers) per hour, the plane was scheduled to arrive in Phoenix, Arizona, around midnight (0700 GMT) under cover of darkness.
As of about 0630 GMT, the plane was circling over Phoenix, going down slowly to save energy as it prepared to land, Solar Impulse said on its website.

A dashboard showing the live speed, direction, battery status, solar generator and engine power, along with cockpit cameras of both Piccard and his view from the plane, were online at live.solarimpulse.com.
The US itinerary allows for up to 10 days at each stop in order to showcase the plane's technology to the public. Other stops are planned for Dallas, Texas, and the US capital Washington, before wrapping up in New York in early July.

That will allow two pilots -- Piccard and his co-founder, Swiss engineer and ex-fighter pilot Andre Borschberg -- to share duties and rest between flights.
The project aims to showcase what can be accomplished without fossil fuels, and has set its "ultimate goal" as an around-the-world flight in 2015.

The plane has four electric motors and runs on energy provided by 12,000 solar cells.
Longer trips have already been successfully completed by the plane, which made the world's first solar 26-hour day and night trip in 2010.

However, the cockpit has room for just one pilot, so even though the plane could likely make the entire US journey in three days, Piccard decided it would be easier to rest and exchange flight control with Borschberg at the stops.

Solar Impulse was launched in 2003.

The plane can fly at night by reaching a high elevation of 27,000 feet (8,230 meters) and then gently gliding downward, using almost no power through the night until the sun comes up to begin recharging the aircraft's solar cells.

The US journey is being billed as the plane's first cross-continent flight. The aircraft completed its first intercontinental journey from Europe to Africa in June on a jaunt from Madrid to Rabat.

The slim plane is particularly sensitive to turbulence and has no room for passengers, but Piccard has insisted that those issues are challenges to be met in the future, rather than setbacks.

"Instead of speaking of the problems, we want to demonstrate solutions," Piccard said as he flew toward Phoenix, stressing that renewable technologies already exist and are well known to science.

"Now we need to put them on a big scale everywhere in our daily life."
